"My mom was hesitant about my two pugs being called "grandpugs" at first as she is not interested in grandbabies either. Now we have a third pug, and after oh, a year, she loves her grandpugs.... she does IT and teaches technology stuff at an elementary school... the pugs in their Halloween costume (the three amigos) is her desktop background. Have to point out that “only then” is not the same as “then and only then.”
“Only then” indicates a necessary condition;
“Then and only then” indicates a sufficient and necessary condition.
You can’t really reduce the concept expressed by “then and only then”, but you could slightly shorten it by writing “if and only if”.
I love that she wrote “SMAHHHHHT”. That’s something I do all the time - New Englander, perhaps?
