Interesting picture of you on your my spacepage. So how long have you smoked pot???????????//
Just so you know, potential employers will look to see if you have a myspace page. I’m not sure you’d really want them to see this. Nice URL Address: penis envy………………great

That’s actually really good advice your Mom is giving you!

Mom is right… it’s amazing how dumb kids are thinking that social networking site are private… once on the net it’s always there. The company I work for always looks at those sites and has routinely not hired recent grads because of their “fun, personal” pictures.

Does anyone know if it’s easy enough to view a myspace page that’s set to private?
Mine’s always been private, but I still kinda worry when I’m applying to jobs that they’ll be able to hack into it somehow…
Thanks!

Maybe this would be a big problem on Facebook, assuming you use your full legal name, but Myspace doesn’t work like that.
Just make sure you don’t email employers with the email you signed up to Myspace with. It’s not foolproof, but it would certainly be effort to find you.

I’m also with Mom on this one. I do hiring and firing, and I have to say that, because of the industry I’m in, I have to be concerned over the local community finding my employees in embarrassing photos on social networks.
So I do go out and look, and more often than not, find this stuff. And it does make a difference to hiring and firing.

Some advice from someone who’s family stalks them:
Ok people, first, set your myspace to private. There is no way they (family, potential employers) can see your page without you friending them. Also, the main picture? Make sure it’s not you with a bong. Make it your favorite band, a your favorite lolcat, whatever. I would advise against making the main picture being you at all. Make your albums friends only as well. And finally, do not make the site url (which you CANNOT CHANGE) your name or something like, I dunno, Penis Envy (though that is pretty clever). Finally, be careful who you friend. If you have something on your private myspace that you do not want someone to know, do not friend that someone. Simple as that.
Next up: Facebook. Anyone in your network can see your profile as a default. MAKE SURE TO SET YOUR SETTINGS AFTER JOINING A NETWORK TO FRIENDS-ONLY. That means in order to see your profile you have to grant them permission by friending them. Now, say your work makes a facebook network, and they ask you to join. DO NOT USE YOUR EXISTING ONE. Make a separate account for that network. The reason for doing this is because you cannot stop your idiot friends from writing on your wall that you are the BONG CHAMP, and you do not want your employer seeing that.
All other networking sites: Do not join if you cannot make it private. Simple as that. Follow the above rules, and you should be fine to do whatever you please.

Not a great idea to have that on your myspace unless your page is private.
Seriously though, what’s the big deal. I cannot believe that people are still uptight about this topic and it is the 21st century.
