I need to hire a housekeeper. If I make contact with your person, I will discuss pay, but if you care to tell me how much you pay, that would help. Also, I wish that you would be honest in your assessment of the individual. I have been burned twice recently and I would just as soon do it myself rather than get another problem child. And, if you’d like to forward this e-mail to any of your friends, please feel free to do so. MUST be legal. MUST speak English in order to answer the phone and handle emergencies. Will not have to do laundry (except folding sometimes) but will need to iron and also polish silver. Prefer to have someone either Tuesday,Wednesday or Thursday for about 6 hours (Can leave earlier if finished.). It would be nice if she has other employers who are flexible enough to be able to switch occasionally. I would like some references, if possible. I do not care where this person is from or what color she is, but I need to be able to undertand her.

I don’t know – it all sound pretty reasonable to me. Be able to communicate, be efficient, be flexible. Isn’t that what any employer wants?
Besides, she is letting an almost perfect stranger into her house…
August 26, 2008 at 11:25 am
What is wrong with wanting your employee to be able to communicate with you? She has clear expectations and is not prejudiced. Finish your work and you are free to go. Sounds like the perfect opportunity if housekeeping is your line of work.

Why is this the responsibility of the daughter/son?
August 26, 2008 at 1:40 pm
Does the housekeeper have to “undertand” her?
August 26, 2008 at 1:42 pm
ok… maybe i’m just operating slower than usual today, because i’m not sure i understand… why is this on here? is there a humorous back story that’s missing? it just doesn’t fit the whole funny haha mother/child correspondence thing…
this reads more like a rough draft for a craigslist ad.
????

“this reads more like a rough draft for a craigslist ad.”
haha wink: couldn’t agree more.

I think the funny part is that they are sending this to their child, which seems a bit odd.

she sounds prejudiced to me and extremely high maintenance
August 27, 2008 at 11:22 am
It seems pretty clear to me that the reason the mother is writing to the son/daughter is that the son/daughter has a maid and the mother is trying to get the information about that individual. Seems pretty reasonable to me. Not sure how people are reading prejudice into this one — she said that country of origin and skin color are irrelevent. Is it prejudice to want someone with whom you can communicate?
August 27, 2008 at 1:19 pm
its prejudice cause shes asuming that the maid will be of color, and probably wont speak english. cause only brown people know how to clean. and how about if the person is non-english speaking, learning a bit of their launguage, but i guess thats out of the question.
August 27, 2008 at 2:00 pm
dp — She said that she doesn’t care what color the person is or where she comes from. How does that constitute an assumption that the maid will be non-white? As for learning the other person’s language, that might be feasible if the maid speaks, say, Spanish, but it takes quite a while to be able to have a basic conversation in a language like Thai (which I’m studying now). I’m all in favor of studying foreign languages, but you’re being ridiculous. I mean, how would she know which language to study? Should she choose a maid and spend a year learning the maid’s language before she actually gets the maid to clean the house?
August 27, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Reminds me of the movie Spanglish.
August 27, 2008 at 11:01 pm
yes she doesnt care what color the maid will be, great. but shes still assuming that the maid will be an illegal and wont speak english. and obvisouly im not talking about learning an entire laungage, but maybe asking the maid ‘how do you say this?’. and she would know which language to learn by simply meeting the maid. i dont think learning some phrases is that outlandish. and isnt it odd that she even has to say that she doesnt care what color she is in the first place?
August 28, 2008 at 2:33 pm
I might sound snobby, but I would want my housekeeper to speak English and be legal. I think the mom has every right to say what she is expecting. I do not think that she should have to learn someone else’s language if she is the one paying them. I dont think it is weird to wonder what color someone is. Prejudices are generalities that have formed from facts.
August 29, 2008 at 1:11 pm
You know what’s really prejudiced? Assuming the housekeeper is going to be female… Look at it. It’s all “she” and “her”.
September 10, 2008 at 10:40 pm
Nothing prejudiced here!! You go mom!

It’s nearly impossible to find knowledgeable people for this topic,
but you seem like you know what you’re talking about! Thanks
