Buttercrack

Now that I look at the subject line above, that word could also be some kind of plumber’s joke, but it is the name of a dessert…… so I guess it is an addictive dessert.
Found it while thumbing through cookbook at slow open house, and meant to share it with you earlier; I’m afraid to make it!

BUTTERCRACK
Oven at 325
Crust:
3/4 stick butter, melted
1 Box Butter Receipe Cake Mix
2 Eggs
Mix crust ingredients by hand until well blended. Batter will be very thick. Press into well greased 9x 13 pan.

Filling:
3/4 stick butter, melted
1 Box Powdered Sugar
1 8oz pkg. Cream Cheese
2 Eggs
Blend filling ingredients with mixer until smooth. Pour over unbaked crust. Bake 55 min. @ 325 or until light golden brown. Cool completely and serve.

What kind of cookbook has an entry called “Buttercrack”?

      Debby- Totally!

I was thinking the same thing when I read the recipe. I grew up in St. Louis where Gooey Butter cake is a staple at every gathering. That stuff is the absolute most delicious dessert that will ever grace your taste buds.

When I moved to Denver nobody knew what I was talking about so I made it for the people at work and they loved it so much I thought they were going to build a shrine to me or something.

In the UK they have a cake called a lardy cake. Made with bread dough and a huge amount of lard, sugar and raisins. They also have ‘sticky bottom buns’ which are a similar combination, something like two inch thick danish pastry.

I knew before I even read the recipe it was Gooey Butter Cake! It’s practically it’s own food group here in St. Louis, in addition to Toasted Ravioli. And if you don’t know what that is, then I suggest you make a visit to our fair town. We will change your life!

I’m curious– does it come out like a custard pie or something?

Melanie- The consistency is hard to explain. I suggest you just make the recipe and try it for yourself, you won’t be sorry! (although you may gain a pound or two, but damn is it worth it)

I’d start a Gooey Butter Cake fan club if I could

I have this recipe, but it’s called Chez Cake. It really is like crack – you can’t eat just one piece.

I’m originally from PA and every Easter a local confectionery company puts these out as chocolate covered eggs! This is the first I’m hearing of it in cake/pie form… oh god, the mass hysteria…
