Does Your Mom Buy You Undies Every Year?

Hi Guys,

It’s Jess this time. I was out braving the crowds this weekend, doing some shopping for my mom and my boyfriend’s mom (among other lucky present recipients). I played it safe with my gift purchasing, but I was wondering if you’ve ever bought your mother something positively inspired for the holidays.

Or, even better: has your mother ever given you something absolutely bonkers or inappropriate for Christmas or Hanukkah or Kwanzaa? A subscription to eHarmony? A year’s supply of Victoria’s Secret Underoos? A flowbee? We want to hear all about your most hilarious gift experiences. Leave them in the comments section!

My mother has this great tradition of buying a teddy to put in my father’s stocking every year.

My mom also used to take my sister and I and our friends out Christmas shopping with her when we were in High School. Needless to say mom not only had scarred my sister and I but also several of our unsuspecting friends when she would grab a naughty nightie off the rack at the store and ask us all for our opinions.

The year I turned 16, under the tree from “Santa” I received a leather jacket, a leather skirt, and a pair of knee high leather boots, all black. Mom’s christmas morning comment: “I think Santa’s trying to make you into a biker slut.”

My mom once put pictures of the boy I had the biggest crush on into a book she bought me for Christmas. She had asked his dad (a co-worker) if she could borrow them for the day.

I think I died that day.

This year though I’m giving her a framed photo of my husband and I and slipped in a picture of that same guy.

When I was about 10, my mom gave me a “Visible Woman” model kit because growing up, she had always wanted one. It even had extra pieces so that you could make the Visible Woman pregnant. I had just learned the facts of life in school that year and was absolutely mortified to have a toy with a uterus and fallopian tubes I was supposed to paint – I never took it out of the box.

My mother has more than once forgotten where she hid our gifts. They usually show up around August or October of the next year and are typically more exciting for her than when she presents them to us with a thrilled, “I found this in my closet!!”

Last year my mom gave me a series of self-help books that became more and more ridiculous in title, the most innocuous one being “The Four Things That Matter Most” and the worst being “The Dance With Anger.”

It was never my mom that gave me crazy gifts, it was my Dad and always late. He always got me socks for Christmas. I guess that with him not beign around often enough to know what I liked he just figured that I always needed socks, so that is what I got.

My mom likes to put “useful” gifts in Christmas stockings. One year she gave us each a roll of duct tape.

      December 22, 2008 at 1:33 pm

    • 12.  Laura

On par with the duct tape above, my mother also likes to put useful things in stockings. One year I got a spray bottle of Goo-Gone and dryer sheets!

Also in line with ‘useful’ gifts. My mother in law gave me a 100 count box of disposible gloves for cleaning. What is that about?

My mum’s most inspired presents to me have been a dictionary (“your vocabulary is shocking, darling”), stomach control underwear (“you just need to STERAMLINE, darling”) and Nicorette gum (“men don’t like smokers, dear”). All in the same year. Later that afternoon she said “perhaps you’ll have a husband to bring to dinner next Christmas”. Lovely. Thanks Mum.

I’m on par with the useful gifts from mom. Every year since I can remember, she has used our stockings as utility gift receptacles. Typically, the load includes a toothbrush, Post-It notes, highlighters, chewing gum, Bic pens and even various kitchen utensils. It’s always fun to see what useful thing she’ll give us next.

My mother always buys me a bizarre figurine for Christmas. One year I got a little ceramic frog with gigantic tits wearing a sweater that said “BIMBO” across the front.

    • 17.  Stacey

Last year for Christmas, my mom sent me a stupid stuffed animal cat that purrs, meows and the stomach raises up and down like it’s breathing. I never took it out of the box. This year, my mom emailed me to tell me she sent my christmas present but that there would be another small pack after the first because she forgot the batteries and that it was “puuuuurrrrfect”. I asked “It’s not another one of those stupid ass cats that fake purr and meow is it?” She immediately yelled “DID I ALREADY GET THAT FOR YOU??!!!?!?!?” Yep, she bought me the same horrible present two years in a row. BTW, I’m 25 years old!

For my mother it’s not what you get, it’s what you don’t. Each year, in July, she asks us to write a detailed list of what we want for Christmas. We have to write the store it’s in and size or color. In all of my 34 years I have yet to receive one item I have written on the list.

      December 23, 2008 at 6:37 am

Alicia, my Mother in Law does the SAME thing. She hounds us for lists, very specific lists, and then completely ignores them!

My mom is another “useful” gift fan. Every year, my sister and I get tampons, pads, razors, socks and underwear in our stocking. It is so awesome to bring a boyfriend home for Christmas and have to show him all the lovely tampons that santa gave me. Although honestly I think my dad is the most embarassed one every year.

My mom always asks for a list too and NEVER buys anything off of it. After 26 years, I still hold out hope that I will actually get what I want for Christmas…

Shes big on theme gift giving too. Like the Christmas after I graduated college she got my a brief case, business card holder and other useful office crap…

My step-mother has also taken to giving us the useful stocking full of toilettries. I guess tampons make sense since she’s a nurse and I ask her to get me free birthcontrol.

My Mom is a HUGE fan of “useful fillers”, so to speak. I have a ziplock back bag in a drawer somewhere that is just bursting with gum, mints, lifesavers, and the like. One year, I’ll finally break and throw it all out. My grandmother is actually the worst… she goes to Linen’s-n-Things or BB&B and buys all that really cheap lotion and body wash and random callus remover metal things. One year I took it all back, took the credit ($47!!) and bought the duvet cover I actually wanted! At least I wasn’t fibbing when I said I loved her gift and use it every day :)

I now have three whole belly dancing outfits, plus a few extras. One belt fits me, nothing else- the three ‘little’ tops could fit a fully grown cat in each ‘cup’.. and two of those came from my mother. :)

      (The third from her sister.)

I got my first “sanitary napkin belt” under the tree and then the next year my first bra appeared. It was truly my favorite 2 christmases….Really. OYYYYYY My mom of course thought she was doing me favors by making them christmas gifts. Oh did I mention I was in 5th grade for the belt and 6th grade for the bra?? Also those were the only “chats” we ever had about the facts of life. She never mentioned anything after that. I guess some gifts speak for themselves!

My mom always gets my sister and I some underwear and socks for , but ALWAYS forgets to get stuff for my dad’s stocking. Last year she actually put in shampoo and soap that she took from his bathroom closet, and he noticed too.

My mother-in-law was so excited for me to open my gift a few years ago. She said she had seen it at the mall and thought immediately of me; she was sure I would love it. I opened the box and pulled out….a slutty santa suit and matching feather-covered mules. She clapped her hands and said, “See! I knew you’d love it.” I couldn’t even manage a smile and my father-in-law turned red and left the room. She really is that clueless…and really does want another grandchild.

My mother is the Queen of Useless and inappropriate gifts. Last year she gave me a shirt that she had been making for herself but then gained too much weight so she decided to give it to me which would have been great except that it was a colour that looks horrendous on me (but fabulous on her), was 2 sizes too big (yet too small for her) and was a fabric and style I would never wear. The year previous to that she decided that she would give me a jewellery box for all 6 pieces of jewellery that I own that don’t fit into the 4 jewellery boxes that I’ve had since I was a little girl.

I have tried to do what I do with my dad which is to be very specific about what I want for Christmas (with my dad, it often involves cutouts from flyers or catalogues) but it doesn’t seem to matter, she has specific ideas about what she will give me and that is what I will get. Can’t wait for this year!

I’d love any of these gifts. This is the 3rd year in a row my mom has been “too broke” to buy me anything. Then she expects me to come home to an undecorated house with no gifts while she either works or holes up in her room and ignores me.

This has nothing to do with the actual question, but to the poster above me about the mother not buying gifts and hanging out in her room or working….for the last 3 years I’ve been that mom (although I do put a few decorations…and this year I gave money and had my bf buy the kids Xmas…I still don’t know what they are getting ..) I know it’s not the *best* thing to do either. I struggle with that and I end up holing myself up in my room over it. In fact I may lose my boyfriend due to the Xmas bules…For some reason reading that post just put everything into a huge perspective and just changed how I’ll be behaving during the holidays from now on. So thank you for you sharing that.

Wow Lou. I know my mom gets depressed but I shouldn’t have to be miserable because she doesnt even try and drags us all down with her. For the last 5 years shes picked a fight in Jan to be mad at me and ignore my birthday in March. Give em undies or fruitcake, just give them yourself and your love.

      Best of luck to you.

One year, I was daydreaming about a week before Christmas. I thought to myself, I really hope no one gives me a nightgown or a camisole or stationery. I’m not sure why I came up with those three items, but it was just what went through my mind. When Christmas Day arrived, my mother gave me a nightgown, a camisole, AND a box of stationery! I always suspected that she could read my mind, but this was ridiculous!

My mother in law heard that I was trying to lose a bit of weight. So she bought me sweatpant. Mind you, ‘Aeropostal” sweats that had the word written across the butt. The kind teenagers wear. I am 41 years old. They were bright yellow. *sigh*

My mom bought my sister underwear that had little red apples and the words “Teacher’s Pet” in big lettering across the ass and put it in her stocking from Santa. I was thankful for the sparkly Christmas trees on mine after I saw what she got.

Growing up, I used to always get undies in my stocking, but once I got to college, it dwindled. Guess making jokes about Muppet panties for a 20 year old finally got to my mom. I realized about halfway through last year, though, that all of my underwear was from Mom, and my supply was going fast (I work outside all summer, so I go through 2 sets of clothes per day, one for work, one for post-work). I had to finally break down and ask dear old Mom for undies this year. True to the awesome mother she is, I got Tinker Bell panties this year, at age 21.

Egregious misuse of an inspired gift:

My mother has a large backyard, and enjoys watching the birds, bunnies, etc. who come and go in the yard. A few years ago I bought her a pair of binoculars so she could keep track of the local fauna (and better cope with her failing eyesight). Forget the rabbits; my mother regularly updates me on the neighbors’ comings and goings: “So the neighbors in the back, their junkie son came home the other night, banging on the door and screaming. I could see the track marks on his arms!”

Identifying track marks from 60 yards away…this from the woman who gave me a “stocking stuffer” of Santa stickers from the dollar store. When I reminded her that I am, in fact, pushing 40, she admonished, “You’re never too old for cute.”

My mother in law got my husband a very nice rolling laptop bag. He loved it, except that he does not have a laptop! She also once purchased, for my father’s birthday, licorice and soda, a nice gesture, except that he is diabetic.

My Momma (or Daddy) hasn’t so far gotten me a lame ass gift, but when I was 10 my great, great Aunt Pansy (she was like 120 at the time, or close) gave me a package of huge, white, shiny granny panties for Christmas. I opened the end of the package, saw what was in there, and quietly set it to the side.
Thanks, Mom, for loudly asking what my gift was. Shiz, even though it was 30 years ago, I feel like going to the kitchen and sticking my head in the oven. Yes, my oven is electric. I just can’t win here.

my mother is also the queen of ridiculous and inappropriate gifts….
she always sends me anti aging cream since I turned 25 (i’m 40 now) but the first Valentine’s Day after my husband and I were married she sent a huge box with a catalog in it, a page marked in the catalog with a sticky note and then under all the packing peanuts the item….a large bilious green, ceramic frog! Nothing says a newlywed Valentines Day like a ceramic frog!

I am 32 years old. My mother buys me no fewer than 5 pairs of lacey panties and matching bras for Christmas every year. Rather than focusing on how painfully weird it has become, I just accept it and look forward to the fact that she spends more on underwear than I ever would.

My Mum once gave me for christmas a size 22 tennis skirt with the price tag still on. Here are the key details:
      1) I’m a size 8
      2) I don’t play tennis
      3) The price tag said 99 cents.

My mother in law still buys my husband socks and underwear for Christmas. He’s 45. I don’t really mind because it’s one less thing for me to do and I guess old habits die hard. But inexplicably, several times a year she sends him a package containing boxed cake mixes and canned oysters, because she “knows he loves them” and she has somehow gotten the idea that we can’t get them where we live. Granted, we live 1200 miles from her, but we’re still in the continental US.

My mother-in-law always ‘paints/decorates’ stockings for my husband, me, our son and my husband’s brother’s family and fills them with stuff. I’m beginning to think she doesn’t like me any more….she got everyone else comfy PJs and me some sort of glass high-heel shaped thing filled with bubble bath…the kicker…we don’t have a tub in our house! BTW – the glass high-heel thing is by my bed to use as a deadly weapon…it weighs around 5 lbs!
      Bless her…she tries:)

My mom is one of 5 children so the last two Christmases that all of our family was together she gave everyone a pen, you know the ones that come a dozen to the box, so for $3 she covered Christmas shopping for 20 people. The worst part was that this year she asked my 10 year old daughter to hand them out – I told my daughter to make sure she told everyone they were “from Grammy”. I may one day end up a lot like my mom, but I wanted to make sure they know I’m not there yet.

For years I have been receiving cat-themed gifts from my mother. I admit to liking cats – especially my own, but am a fan of the real variety, not so much the painted-on-stuff kind. I have accumulated 3 cat mugs, 2 cat espresso sets, cat dishes, cat journals, cat calendars and a book of cat stories over the past few years. I’m waiting for the cat sweaters to start coming.

My mom usually gives okay gifts…practical gifts, but usually ones that aren’t too bad, like an electric mixer. HER mom on the other hand…oh goodness. My Grandmother just turned 85, and for Christmas this year, she tried giving me underwear…that were hand-me-downs. From HER. :D At least she thought of me. (We had been discussing how I needed some new ones.) Best gift I’ve EVER recieved….needless to say, I laughed the entire way home.

I’m happy to see so many others get “practical” stockings. My dad always supplements the stockings with weird candy and sodas, though. I look forward to stockings the most, probably. The worst Christmas gift my mother ever gave me was a toilet seat. From SANTA. (I was 15-ish.) It was sitting in my present chair with a red bow on it. When my sister and I were asking about it a couple of years later, she said that I was really hard to shop for that year, and our bathroom needed a new seat. Thanks, Mom. (To add insult to injury, my sister got a bike that year!)

My sister is a hairdresser and got a flow-bee on year. She HATED it and considered it a huge insult. My mom also gives usefull “filler” gifts. This year it was a tweezer and a lingerie bag to wash bras in. She used to be big into the self-help books and once gave me a book about finding a “good man”, AFTER I was engaged. Subtle mom, very subtle.

My mum always goes for safe gifts to be honest, smellys, pyjamas, slippers… The usual. Last year my dad got me a little cocktail set (For two) which was awsome, and then, randomly, a stuffed frog thing that when you press its little froggy hand sways and sings “It’s a Wonderful word”. Weird and wonderful. I have to say I love it, but it’s just so odd. Especially considering my brother got an iPod and my sister got a dvd player. It now sits pride of place on top of my TV wearing some lab glasses.

i left my husband this past summer and it’s just been me and my 3 year old. so for christmas this year, my mom gave me a $100 giftcard to the local sextoy shop. when i opened the card and saw what she had given me (in front of the whole family) i asked her why?! and she’s like, “well, you’re living alone now, without a man. you’ve got to do SOMETHING to relieve stress.” dear god. she’s nuts. but you know, that card’s come in pretty handy……

My grandmother this year gave me a shovel for christmas..she got me tons of great stuff, clothes, new boots and then the shovel. I had no idea what to say. a little black plastic shovel. she said its for if i ever get snowed in some where i could dig my self out. it make sense but its kinda unlikely..a shovel? random.

One year for Christmas my Dad was really excited to give me and my mom our gifts. I opened mine first and it was….a stainless steel lifetime-warranty cheese-grater from Williams and Sanoma. I was 15 at the time. My mom got a fancy hand blender that only has one blade (read:useless). I joked with my Dad as I opened my next present that I really wanted a spatula and was shocked to find he had gotten me an MP3 player. I had told him I wanted one about 6 months before but didn’t think he would actually get me one….
I really like my cheese grater too : )

Since my Mum married my step Dad about 18 years ago, they have sent me and my two step siblings what I colloquially termed “the xmas box of crap”. It’s a box, usually the size of a box of photocopier paper, and it’s filled with stuff from the dollar store like a cat food scoop, mechanic’s hand cleaner, green pot scrubbies. The weirdest year was the one where my box of crap included a used coffee mug (it had spoon swirls in the bottom) and some past-the-sell-by-date candy that had been marked down for quick sale. lol On the bright side, my friends always look forward to when the Greyhound arrives with my box of crap for the year.

My Mom tended to lose her freaking mind around the holidays. One year, all the boys in the family got a paper back on the evil’s of porngraphy. My Brother got 2 of them. I may mention I’m the youngest and was like 30 at the time.

Another year, we were going through our stocking Cristmas AM. Mom would always include a couple stocking stuffers along with candy, etc … I’m unwrapping an oddly shaped gift to find a large metal salt shaker, the kind a commercial kitchen might use, I was pondering this, looking to see if my siblings had seen this only to see my brother looking right back at me with a very large pepper shaker He’d just opened.

      These are fun !

I’ve been getting pot holders, dish towels, turkey basters and other assorted useful items for yrs.

I’m thinking the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree tho. because this yr I included 6 boxes of condoms in my 17 yr old sons stocking.

No , he didn’t have to open the stocking infront of the extended family.

My granny would take a handful of candies from her small ‘bodega’ that she ran and put a few pieces in each stocking, as well as post-its with glittery pens, new three-to-a-pack undies to KEEP IN THE CAR (just in case), etc.

We really miss those silly gifts now that she’s gone. At least she thought of us, even though the thoughts were really scattered…

The answer is yes – See story below

Ever since I was 6, I would sneak into one of my sister’s rooms to wear their panties. this happened 2 – 3 times a week – Made the mistake at age 9 by trying on my mother’s panties – Sure enough, got caught – Also caught hell – She tried to embarrass me by dragging to buy panties – It back fired – After she purchased them for me, she said, ” Now Bill, aren’t you embarrassed.” I said, ” Mom to tell the truth, I like the fact that you bought them for me.”

If looks could kill, I would have been murdered. ” Just wait till we get home,” she said ! “I am going to tell your father” I pleaded with her not to tell him, but she just let me stew for a while – When dad came home nothing happened – Boy was I relieved.

When I went to bed that night, mom came into the bedroom to say good night – She pulled down the covers and saw that was sill wearing my boy’s underwear – She said, “Since you like wearing girl’s undies, I am going to make you wear them all the time” – She went back to her room and brought me a red pair on panties – “Here she said, put these on” – So i did – “Listen young man, I’ll be right back” She went into the just washed laundry and brought back one of my sister’s bras – “Okay Bill, put this on”- I said, “are you sure mom?” – and she said yes – After I put on the bra, mom said – “Now stand up and lets see what you look like” so I did – “Boy, I mean girl, you really look pretty!” – It looks like I am going to have to buy more girls undies the next chance I get – Is that Okay with you?” I said yes. She kissed me and fixed the covers over saying – “Have a great nights sleep” – With that she left the room – I fell asleep really quickly

She pushed into the barrier again and sought his square chin and gorgeously wide mouth. Savous sighed, closing his eyes and sinking against the rock wall behind him. We may have even convinced ourselves that we dont feel what we feel for them. But the vetriese… Irin paused. The thought of lashing out at Brevin, Lanthan, or Tykir fizzled as it occurred. It was so different, this control. Gala caught Eyrhaen watching them and smiled. Appalled, Eyrhaens mouth fell open. Eyrhaens here, he announced quietly to the room, waving for her to pass by him. Clearing her throat, she stepped back and turned to face Nialdlye again. Would be nice if she mentioned the word love. Gods, I would hope not. Would you let me go? No more prompting was necessary. The larger part of her brain writhed with the rest of her body. He rolled his hips into her, taking his time in building toward climax. She considered lighting one or two of the lamps but discarded the idea. Clearly, Eyrhaens choice was, indeed, a relief to him. She blinked, thankful that hed broached the subject. He laughed, pulling his mouth from hers after a few steps.

My dad is a professional bad-gift shopper. The year I got my first car, I got a bungee cord, a tire pump, a first aid kit for my glovebox, and a tire repair kit. He had the biggest smile on his face while I was opening everything and when I finished he excitedly asked, “What do you think?!”

He is also known for buying things for himself and wrapping them addressed to my mom so that he doesn’t get in trouble for shopping for himself before christmas.

That’s actually a really good gift, I would be happy to get that! (Instead of a watch when I specifically said I didn’t want one… in silver when I pretty well only wore gold jewellery… or a bathrobe and matching slippers in my sister’s favourite colour… or the ugliest (and most expensive) graduation necklace ever.)

I am 17 and catholic and finially made my first holy communion two years ago last may when i was 15.i was in the class with the 7 and 8 year olds,so for the christmas before,i was given my entire first communion outfit! it was a poofy, top of the knees, communion dress, with the matching veil, white tights, and white ‘mary jane ‘shoes.with the outfit was a white under shirt, cloth diaper and diaper pins, and a pair of white adult size plastic pants[aka-rubberpants]My parents and my great aunt told me that since i was in the class with the little kids, that i would be dressed the same as the little girls.I was flabbergasted! That may i was dressed in the outfit for the ceremony and felt like a little girl and at my party, mom told my friends and female relatives that i had a cloth diaper and rubberpants on under my tights just like the little girls!

To Brittany D.-I know how you felt! i was baptized at Easter vigil when i was 15 and both of my Grammas collaborated and gave me the traditional white, poofy, above the knees, short sleeve baptism dress with a matching bonnet, lace anklets and white mary jane shoes and a tee shirt with a cloth diaper and ruffled rubberpants to wear under the dress. On easter sunday, mom and grammas dressed me in the outfit and i was baptized as a baby. The only thing that saved me that day was all the other preteen and teen girls were dressed in the same outfit.
