Backstory: A friend had just given birth and I called my mom in tears (near hysterics) to share with her how emotional I was feeling – the miracle of birth and specifically how emotionally overwhelming it all was… This was her emailed response.
I totally understand – I had an emotional day too – my credit card bill came in the mail.

HA ! now that’s funny.

We…must have the same mother. The day before I moved out of state, when my husband was STILL out of town on business, we hadn’t sold our house, I was packing for 3 weeks, 3 months, and the rest of my life, my son was barely potty trained in time for our several-week drive around the country, I was saying goodbye to my friends and life of the past 7 years AND about to start a doctoral program in a town where we knew no one, my mother told me she was ALSO having a hard day: she’d had a difficult customer service transaction at Best Buy. And spent 23 minutes telling me every excruciating detail.

As a mother, let me try to explain. When our children get a little too emotional, some of us may have the tendency to try to “help” by toning things down a bit. Kind of like we did when you were little and skinned your knee and we distracted you with something shiny.

Ugh. How self-centered and dismissive. Intimacy issues much?

The mom, I meant. I find it very moving that the submitter had wanted to share this moment with her mother, the person who had given birth to her. The mom’s ridiculous response gave me a stomach ache.

JM – I think it was totally meant in jest. I know my mom would pull something like that – actually she has before. Except it was my CC bill… It was for some reason still going to her house and she thought it was hers and opened it (I don’t care, its Mah Mommy! No secrets with us) and I called her to tell her I was having a horrible day and her response was “I know, I just saw your CC bill.” It made me laugh. Like the mom said above. Shiney objects. I dont think it was intended as a self centered comment
