Smurfs, Hookers, Etc.

Backstory: this was a public response my mother made to the blog I’m keeping of my time in Geneva, Switzerland. The Schtroumpfs is a cluster of buildings meant to look like they were inspired by The Smurfs (Les Schtroumpfs is what they were called in French). She basically thinks everything in Geneva is the red-light district, but I think she’s confusing Geneva for Amsterdam. Not sure.

Hi, it’s Mom. It’s almost like being there. I do resent your taunts about “why aren’t you visiting too.” Seriously, love the photos…especially the Schtroumpfs! How fun! I’d love to live there. Please tell me they aren’t all in use for the sex trade.

This is SO like my mom. I love her to death but sometimes she worries over the strangest things. I’m going to university in Australia and I was heading to Borneo to attend a 2 week field biology course. Just before I left I got a very worried call from my mom because a missionary teacher was being threatened with death after allowing her schoolkids to name a teddy bear used as the class mascot Mohammed…in SUDAN, over 6,000 miles away from where I was going. We had a bit of a laugh over it after I explained that Sudan is in the middle of Africa, not the Middle East, and that Malaysia is pretty far away from both Africa and the Middle East. I also promised, very seriously, not to get involved with young schoolkids naming teddy bears.
