Backstory: my mother’s response to my blog about taking a tour of the particle accelerators at CERN (the European research center on particle physics) on Valentine’s Day.
Mom here. Ok, you are officially the nerdiest girl I know. No one goes to CERN and thinks of it as sexy or love-laden unless you are so into Dr. Strangelove as to be un-redeemable. They let you guys in there with cameras? Where the !@#!@#%$!$#!@# was their security. And, not to put too fine a point on it, you are a NERRRRRRRRRDDDDDDD. Surrounded by beautiful scenery, luscious Euro types and all you can photograph is “I don’t know what it is but it is a stainless steel piece of scientific equipment and it is gorgeous.” I think your German heritage (you know the one your Grandfather won’t acknowledge and says he will, if he finds out he has a drop of German blood, slit his wrists and let it out!) is coming to the forefront. I won’t tell your Grandfather if you promise not to either. Have fun and tell your friends you didn’t get this nerdiness from MY side of the family thank you very much. Love you bunches and more Mom.

A nerd after my own heart!

My mother said the same thing to me, only she meant it in a much more derogatory manner. I just told her that I would have rather inherited the nerdiness from my dad than the inbred stupidity from hers :)

And now I’m horribly, terribly jealous of your tour of CERN!
Although, my mother’s response to “guess what I did today?” is usually “oof, I love you, but if you’re going to talk nerdy biology stuff, I’m giving the phone to your father. You know that stuff makes me queesy.”
