I AM GOING TO SHOOT YOU. WHY DO YOU GO TO GET A JOB AND NOT TAKE YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY CARD. IT IS LIKE GOING TO THE PROM WITHOUT A DRESS. LIKE GOING TO THE AIRPORT WITH OUT A TICKET. LIKE STARTING A CAR WITHOUT GAS. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OK. It won’t be until I return from my trip.
I love you, but sometimes I wonder why.

That is a little harsh don’t you think?

Lol. Depends on your relationship with your Mom, I guess!
March 12, 2009 at 1:11 pm
Uh, it’s really not that big of a deal not to bring your social security card. Jeez, mom. Calm down. You can let them know your SSN tomorrow.
March 12, 2009 at 2:49 pm
Mom needs a stiff drink and a Valium.
March 12, 2009 at 2:53 pm
They actually have to make a copy of the card, or else they wouldn’t know if you were just giving them someone else’s SSN.
March 12, 2009 at 2:54 pm
Wow
March 12, 2009 at 4:04 pm
Hilarious!! Go mom.
March 12, 2009 at 4:50 pm
I have been in that Mom’s shoes. I can already see that not only is this not the first time this has happened but the point is that now Mom has been asked to find the ss card and mail it RIGHT AWAY.

This sounds just like me! I provide endless fun for my two twenty-something children. They would read this post, look at each other and not believe that there’s another mother out there just like me. Like post #2 said, it depends on the relationship you have with your Mom.

H (#5) They have NEVER made a copy of my social security card at any new job I’ve started at.
March 12, 2009 at 9:42 pm
I ALWAYS have my card copied when I start a new job!
March 12, 2009 at 10:36 pm
you can have either a soc card or a passport. some people are missing one or the other. everybody needs to calm the fuck down.
March 12, 2009 at 11:07 pm
Yeah, somebody’s been asked to fill out an I-9, and somebody made it Mom’s problem–while Mom was traveling–that s/he didn’t bring the ID. I think that’s definitely an appropriate, rolled-up newspaper on the nose kind of response there, but she’s also sending the card, and hopefully Offspring is now wise enough to retain the thing.

Ive NEVER had to give my SS Card out…. and who doesn’t know the number by heart after a certain age?
March 13, 2009 at 4:26 pm
Does anybody here have a real job? That pays taxes? I have ALWAYS had to give my SS CARD – not the number – the CARD to the company for a copy. Except for when I was working under the table. Jackasses.
March 16, 2009 at 2:22 am
I doubt anyone would send this in to be posted if they were really offended by how “harsh” it was.
And I have to agree with Ashley… where the hell are you people working?!
March 16, 2009 at 4:12 pm
It seems like most people on here agreed that you had to have your Soc. Sec. Card. Only one person said otherwise!!
March 16, 2009 at 5:45 pm
Jesus. Mom’s a little bananas, huh? Maybe she needs a dog instead of a kid. Besides, who brings their Social Security card to a job interview or work or whatever? They must live in TX or something. Does she mean she won’t shoot him until she returns from her trip or she won’t give the kid the card until then?

When you get hired at a new job in the US, you have to show either proof of citizenship or proof that you are allowed to work in the US.
March 24, 2009 at 9:00 pm
I handle this for my company with new hires. You either need to present a social security card AND a valid drivers’ license OR a passport. However, since the number is what they need for their paperwork, occasionally companies will just trust you to give them the number for their paperwork and then bring in the card or else your passport at a later (though not too late) date.
And my mom would have said the same thing, except she would have used the phrasing I’ve heard a bazillion times over the years: “A failure to plan on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.” If I ever find the person who wrote that kitschy office plaque…

In Canada we have a similar card and it has to be shown and most companies require a photocopy for your HR file as well as it being on all of your tax forms. I think mom is in the right.
March 25, 2009 at 10:54 am
HRGirl, I think my mom read the same plaque! The other (related) one I hate is “If it was important to you, you would have remembered.”
