The Cat Came Back?

Backstory: Cookie was a cat that we got as a kitten when I was 9 years old; she expired about 15 years later.

Don’t tell anyone – but Cookie is in our freezer. She’s all wrapped up in a box with plastic and tape. I know that it’s kinda creepy but we couldn’t think of where else to keep her until spring. I’m going to ask Emily, the elderly lady who lives next door, if we could keep her in her garage. Nobody uses it and it’s secure. I have a key because I keep her bird feeders filled and the bird food is is her garage. I miss having her around – the dear old bat.

Phew! I was worried my mom was the only one who was kinda creepy like this! My mom kept several a goldfish and a hamster (both died in the winter) in the freezer until the ground thawed and we could properly bury them come spring.

I think I’ve found my mother’s long lost sister. We have a freezer full of dead birds….

Ha! We also have a freezer full of dead birds. They hit our windows and my mom keeps them for years and years “because they are pretty.”

This reminds me of the episode on The Office where Dwight kills Sprinkles, Angela’s cat, and then keeps it in the freezer.

Whatever happened to flushing the small ones down the toilet? The only weird thing we ever kept in the freezer was my son timothy’s placenta after his home birth. We finally threw it away, but it was with us for 10 years. We were hoping to buy a house someday and plant a tree on top of it, but it doesn’t look like that will happen any time soon.

BTW – birds carry disease… why would you let your mom keep them where you keep FOOD!

“I miss having her around – the dear old bat.” Is that Emily or Cookie?

Monkey, all animals carry disease, from tasty meat sources to beloved pets to us. When freezing meat whole or in parts, wrap it up securely and keep it below 0 F, and their chances of spreading anything are pretty limited. I’m presuming–hoping–that people aren’t just sticking uncovered creatures in the freezer.

It seems to me like they are uncovered-otherwise why keep them because they are pretty-if you’re just going to cover them up…weird! Just cremate!

Monkey – Well, it’s the freezer over the fridge with beverages. You just have to be careful if you’ve over-imbibed adn open the freezer by mistake. Scares the Hell out of new guests.

My sister, who’s 10, and my brother, who is almost 7, were both home births. We have both their placentas, stacked one on top of the other, in the freezer.

CBC…That is just wrong! Hope they don’t mistake it for liver! I wouldn’t even tell people that story for fun. yikes! Just be glad that idea didn’t sink in until after your birth. What are the future plans for the placentas? Are they in the family will, or what?

We kept our cat out in the shed till the ground thawed, but only because she wouldn’t fit in the freezer. Didn’t I read Pet Cemetary that year! creepy creepy creepy!

My sister has pet rats, that she buries at my house in the country, and everynow and then you’ll find a bundle with a proper name on it in her freezer. I think that’s okay, but the bird thing is weird… get it stuffed if you think it’s so pretty.

When I was little my dad put a dead diamond back rattlesnake and a dead copperhead in plastic baggies in our freezer. They were headless. He told us to memorize what they looked like and stay away from the live ones. We lived in the middle of town.

My coworker told me a similar story. Her husband accidentally backed over and killed their beloved cat in the middle of winter, so they wrapped it in plastic and cloth and put it in the freezer until spring so they could have a proper burial. I hadn’t ever thought of that until she was telling me about it, though, but it makes sense.

What happens if the power goes out for a while and the things in the freezer go bad? Yuck! It’s one thing throwing out melted ice cream…a dead cat is another!
