I love that running the marathon is almost an afterthought. It’s like she’s asking if the daughter picked up some shopping for her.

I also love that the Boston Marathon is an afterthought – a jog in the park, perhaps? I walked a marathon last fall after training all summer and my mom said a few DAYS later, “How did your walk go?” I just said it went fine, figuring my time and other information might require explanation and she said, “So how far was that?”

I just don’t know sometimes…I suppose she has no frame of reference for the mental/physical prep of a marathon! Too bad it wasn’t captured in an email. :)

Or . . . maybe she has run the Boston Marathon every year for the last 15 years, and runs a marathon a month? Why does everyone automatically assume that the Boston Marathon was something special for this woman? It could be that her marathons are so much a part of her life that her family just accepts it as “normal”, and her mom was just being polite? This comes from being married to a man who spent the first three years of our married life running a marathon every other weekend, and training about 90 miles a week — for us, a marathon was just an excuse for a weekend trip! He’d do the marathon, and we’d spend the rest of the weekend sightseeing, visiting with running friends, etc.

And H. H. Munro’s pen name was “Saki”!
