Dont let me wife read this, she might think she has to play catch up as she has had only 3, that she has told me about at least, me being number 3. The other 2 from previous marriages with no fooling around in between as far as I know.

Most of the women I know had more than 8, before they were out of High School. . . . ..

EIGHT? That seems like a lot to me…. I’ve had three, so far. I guess if this relationship doesn’t work out and I don’t get married for a long time, I’ll have more… but EIGHT?

Although I’m curious what the average for men is. Way above eight, I’m sure. Because somehow men are allowed to sleep with as many as they want and not be considered a ho. :P

My current wife (been married 16 years) makes the eighth woman that I have had sex with and that puts me average if the same holds true for men. BUt I also must agree with Sarah, it does seem more acceptable for a man to have numerous sexual encounters and never be called a ho. Why is it that a man can get away with it but if a woman has numerous partners she is labeled a ho, or easy, or her morals are not what they should be. Just the other night on How I met YOur mother the one guy was bragging about sleeping with 200 women. Whats up with that?

Does the “average” include females who died before ever having sex at ALL? Seems low to me, too. I mean, over a lifetime? Ever?

Well, maybe it’s including all those women in countries where you get stoned to death for having sex outside of marriage. That would probably have kept my average down….

I read an interesting article awhile back that pointed out that, mathematically, the AVERAGE number of partners that men and women have can’t be too different–the only way that a variance can come into play is same sex partners. The medians might be different but the means should be pretty close.

I doubt the same holds for men. It’s probably much higher.

And Sarah, how old are you?

I may’ve been triplets in some other reality plane, or something—I think I was past the 8 by the end of freshman year (college). There must be a lot of nuns figured into that average.

The number 8 is probably based on a poll- which is almost certainly not scientifically valid. so… don’t worry about averages! do what’s best for you.

Sue – glad it’s not just me! I was reading the comments going “Oh, well, I guess that makes me woefully underaverage …” I’ve had one, as has my boyfriend – and as we’re planning on getting married I guess we’ll never be average, lol!

Eight does seem very high to me, too, but I guess that’s from the rose-tinted glasses of my one-man self.

I’m on that wagon, too, Sue and Kirstie. My husband and I were each other’s firsts – and we’re 28 (me) and 32 (DH), respectively. If that average is close to true (and taking the “Factor of Three” into account), I’m surprised the STD rate is so low.

All I can say to Sue, Kirstie and WooHoo is good for you. If I would have met my current wife first, we would both be 1 for 1. Unfortunately it took too many years before we met, but I applaud you 3 for being underaverage. I wish I could say the same thing. You have a good thing going so dont feel bad for being underaverage in this department. As far as I am concerned you are above average and should be proud of it!!

Ah ha, this sounds like my mum. We had a few different sex talks from the time I was a kid until I was about 18. During one of them she was telling me about one of her experiences as a teenager and sort of started rambling. “Well, that’s enough about your loose mother”, she finally said. HA!

What’s the point of measuring yourself against anyone else in any capacity? Barring harming another person, you ought to have the right to live your life as you see fit–make your own decisions and then bear the responsibility for those decisions.

It annoys me greatly, though, to see double standards for men and women.

How can the numbers be much different for men as they are for women? You have to have sex with someone else and the proportion of men who are gay and women who are gay are similar.

Unless there are a few very busy women the average number of partners for men and women must be around the same.

Hmm… I am 21 years old, and I have had sex with 22 men. Many of my friends are surprised at this, assuming that I have been with more. When I think about it, I really don’t consider myself very promiscuous; I just seem to get into sexual situations quite a bit while in the meantime I’ve been searching for Mr. Perfect. I think that having less than eight sexual partners is something one would have to work at (unless they found The One while they were young). I’m not sure how I would fit into this survey, though, since I am a gay man.

I agree that the numbers for men and women would have to be similar. There are almost equal numbers of men and women in the sexual pool, therefore, if mens’ numbers were higher that would suggest that they all shared a few excessively loose women.

I’m 21, still a virgin, and feel that there should never be shame attached to either having many partners, or none or being somewhere in between! I think it’s all a matter of choice – you know what you’re comfortable with, you know your body, your heart and soul the best out of anyone out there. If you can look at your life and have no regrets that’s the most important thing, not some arbitrary number.
