Mom Vs. Telemarketers

Me: Mom, do you have a fax machine now? My calls won’t go through.
Mom: Yes, we bought that to stop telemarketing calls. We turn it on, and they can’t call us.
Me: Mom, NO ONE can call you.
Mom: Oh, I guess you’re right. Just send me an email when you want to call and I’ll turn off the fax.

Love to know if Mom thought that up, or if it was an idea from the Salesman’s pitch!

Hah! My dad and stepmom had one of those thing you plug your phone into that’s supposed to stop telemarketers from ringing through. It may have worked, but every time they answered the phone it made a horrible beeping noise. I think the best deterrent (besides a no call list) is caller ID.

Uh oh…I guess someone forgot to tell mom that you can get “spam” faxes, too! Telemarketers can hear the fax machine and if they are determined enough, can simply send a fax instead. Ick!

This is hilarious. You COULD cut out a step or two and just fax her “turn me off, your child wants to call you.”

Um… has she not heard of the Do Not Call List? No electronics purchases required!

The Do Not Call List may help, but not a great deal. Charities, politicians, companies you’ve done business with, etc. can make their calls anyway. CallerID is great, but many organizations will call daily until they get through.

I recently reported calls I got from Sweepstakes Mar (I suppose “Mar” was “Maryland”–too long for CallerID). Sweepstakes calls are all scams, as far as I know. They either get people to send money to pay taxes or shipping on worthless prizes won or get enough information to steal identity. Something’s fishy when you haven’t entered any contests and wind up “winning.” Got a nice boiler-plate letter from the FCC after I complained, stating that no law had been broken.

Whenever I get this type of call, I Google the number and see what others have written about it and include my own experience.

Maybe that fax machine isn’t such a bad idea.
