How to Save Money in Italy

Backstory: My brother Frank took our very fit and youthful 75 year-old mother to Italy for ten days… and found ways to stretch every dollar they spent!

Mom: We had a double room in Rome but we would have had to pay twice as much for two people to stay in it so Frank smuggled me in.

Me: He WHAT?

Mom: We never entered or left the hotel together. I would just pretend to be visiting another guest.

Me: Oh my God!

Mom: And to get a buffet meal you had to buy a token at reception and then present it in the restaurant. So I would really fill my plate and then Frank would slip into the restaurant and eat off it too. (Laughs).

Me: I’m just glad i didn’t have to call our embassy to bail you both out of jail!

Why go to Italy if you are going to count every cent once you get there? Makes absolutely no sense at all to me…….

Wow. That is truly appalling…and more importantly…THEFT. I would be ashamed to admit that I had spent my holiday in Italy stealing from the hotel. The expense of a meal is not so great that one has to resort to stealing from the restaurant. How unethical!!!

Would your brother and mother Dine and Dash from a restaurant at home?? Probably not.

It’s a shame they didn’t get caught and charged with petty theft! Wouldn’t that be a nice souvenir of their trip abroad?

      Woah! Settle down…

I thought this was hilarious. I hope they had a great time.

OK, in their defense, apparently the hotel had put their prices up between the time of the initial booking and their arrival in Italy. So they felt some sense of moral justification…

Yes, he was stealing, but holy crap… calm down. I think it’s hilarious that they got away with it. I doubt the place went bankrupt due to a guy smuggling in a 75 year old lady.
