Mom: I have this pen for you if you want it. Parkers used to be THE pens, and I got one for free.
Me: What? How can a pen be THE pen. A pen is a pen.
Mom: No, like Mont Blanc pens. Those are THE pens, too. Have you never heard of Mont Blanc?
Me: No, ofcourse not.
Mom: Look it up!
Me: lol
Mom: LOOK IT UP
Me: Fine fine
Mom: So do you want this pen? Don’t lose it.
Me: I will lose it, everyone loses pens.
Mom: Well then I’ll keep it.

Back in the glorious 60′s when i was coming up to my finals for my nurse registration i bought a Parker pen to use in my exams. It was a fountain pen and cost me £3.00 which was a week’s wages. Happy days. I passed.

Funny. Last year for Christmas my Mother-in-Law sent me an authentic fountain pen and a beautiful handwritten note saying how fountain pens make writing so fun and exciting, and have inspired her to do lots more letter writing. I took it as not-so-subtle hint since my in laws beg me to keep in touch more, and are convinced my busy life is just an excuse to ignore them. Looked up the fountain pen on the internet, and it cost her upwards of $50 – the most expensive gift she’s ever given me. Too bad it will find its way to Ebay this fall….

Joyello, when will it be on Ebay? Are you going to have a no reserve auction starting at a penny and the highest bidder gets it? My wife just bought a fountain pen and paid a little over ten bucks for it and I almost choked on my spit. But 50 bucks for a pen? Must be some kinda fountain pen. Oh, you really should write more often and keep in touch.

This whole exchange made me LOL. I got a Mont Blanc pen for graduation from college from my in-laws. Since they live overseas, my husband presented it to me and said : DO NOT LOSE THIS PEN!!! I thought, okay, its a pen….then I looked up the cost online: $600.00 dollars! WTH?!?! Why didn’t they just give me the cash so I could start paying of my student loans!
But I do love that pen. I write all my student loan checks with it!

Ewwww how tacky are people to say they wish people who gave them GENEROUS and TIMELESS gifts would have given them the cash instead? Tacky, tacky, tacky.

I love reading postcards I never normally read the comments, but this dialogue cracked me up so I had to see the comments. I was shocked to see that these extravagant pens seem to be so common place with people. I’ve never heard of such, are they refillable for 60 bucks?!?!? Is it really worth it? Anyway, this is my favorite postcard commentary yet…I’m odd I guess.

LiLi, take a breather. I’m pretty sure that Amanda appreciated the thought and generousity of the gift, however; she simply questioned its practicality. Any gift is wonderful and thoughtful, but $600.00 for a pen is a little extreme.

Thanks Fantab. I really do appreciate the pen, it is beautiful…but it is like any other pen. I feel as though after 10 years my inlaws didn’t know me enough to put thought into a gift that would suit me better, knowing I am not one to know much about expensive pens and such. My husband felt the same way, and they do the same with him. His grad. gift was a Rolex, and while it is beautiful and timeless, my husband is a roadie/stage hand for bands. He never has an occasion to wear it. It better fits the lifestyle his parents WISH we had, rather than the one we chose.

I love Parker pens. I recently bought an old one on Ebay for less than 10 bucks, and I love it. I agree that Parker pens are THE pens.

I disagree, a pen is not a pen. I didn’t realize this until I started college and bought the most amazing pen for class. Sure, it was supposedly a normal pen and only cost me a couple dollars, but it is AMAZING. Now I’m never satisfied writing unless I use that pen. XD

People are picky about pens. I do the stationery order for a medium size office and I would guess that I get five orders every month for distinct pens. It makes ordering a pain but it sure brings joy to my co-workers (bless their hearts).
PS…I never “lose” pens. I chew the lids. People don’t come within field goal range of my pens!

This is my post, and after reading these comments, maybe I’ll ask my mom for that pen after all! :)

I’m an editor and as such I’m very, very particular about my red pens. But none of them cost more than a few bucks. I’m having a hard time understanding what kind of materials and craftsmanship could possibly go into a pen that would make it worth $600!

Penny, I know what you mean. We’ve got 13 attorneys in our office and just about as many different types of pens. Everyone’s got their favorites!

JRG – probl will post to Ebay in early Nov when people start thinking about christmas gifts, but I must sell for more than 1 penny otherwise it’s not worth the fees :) I do write to them – I just use email since I type 90 wpm and handwrite about two! Handwritten notes I typically reserve for condolences and thank yous. However, I have to admit I actually follow my rules for the thank you note for this fountain pen. I had this guilty feeling like if I sent a handwritten thank you note, it should be using the pen, and certainly they would be able to tell….so I cheated and sent an email thank you for this one. It came with a BOTTLE of ink. I have this frightening image of myself – ink dripping down my fingertips, ink splattered on the office ceiling, ink smeared on my new LCD computer monitor, and mascara-stained tears smudged on my cheeks. I can’t get over this image to even make an attempt at using the pen!

On the subject of pens… I remember I got a wooden pen with my name engraved on the side, I still have it and though I dotn use it to write with alot I think its a beautiful gift. I dotn think id say the same for parkers and mont blancs, well unless your name was on them… lol
