I too thought this email was a little mean (and though I haven't lived with my folks since I was 18, I know they'd welcome me back if I ever needed to stay there temporarily, such as for grad school). Course maybe the daughter was joking when she asked, knowing what Mom's reaction would be. You never can tell! I don't think Mom's mean for saying no, just that it could have been worded a little nicer (if this conversation is indeed serious). JRG, that seems a bit harsh.
