"God, just one more thing to piss me off that I have to shoot at. "
I am using this whenever possible. I've never wanted to shoot an animal even a little, but plenty of people.
Dear Office of Homeland security, the above is just sarcasm.

My mom says human hair and eggshells help keep deer from eating your foliage. Just save your hair clippings and scatter them around your plants. You can crush egg shells and scatter them, too.

I've never tried this, so don't know whether it works. Our dogs are always outside, so they run the deer off if they get too close.

A family friend received an air rifle as a Christmas present after complaining about the deer in her garden. Your mom may be just as angry, but she's a lot more comfortable with her BB gun than our friend!
My mom prefers to let out the dog. (Before PETA protests, he just wants to play with them, so no deer are ever harmed.)

I'm betting a BB gun won't phase a deer too much. A better solution if you have a bit of land and your city allows it (many do that you wouldn't expect) - meet a friendly bowhunter and let him hang a treestand 30 yards off the backyard. I'll volunteer if Mom lives in Alabama! :)

Yeah, my mom liked the wildlife until the deer ate the roses and an owl took the cat in front of her eyes. I had a license to shoot with my bb gun after that!
