Just save your hair clippings and scatter them around your plants. You can crush egg shells and scatter them, too. I've never tried this, so don't know whether it works. A better solution if you have a bit of land and your city allows it (many do that you wouldn't expect) - meet a friendly bowhunter and let him hang a treestand 30 yards off the backyard.
