Wish my mom had been this great when I told her I was dating a girl. I probably wouldn't have told her at all if she'd been inclined to chat with neighbors about it, though.

Funny story - I remember in 8th grade my best friend's mom asked her if she was a lesbian because she hadn't had a boyfriend yet (she isn't), to which my friend responded "no, I haven't had a boyfriend yet because I'm 13." Then a week later the same friend was cranky because she was on her period and her mom was convinced it was because she was pregnant.

Dear Wendall, excellent points, all well made. Very sorry for your loss. Also, I totally agree that some things are private and that's ok and healthy. Thanks for your post. I knew I was being bristley but I posted anyway.... Thanks again for sharing.

I've never commented before and I can't believe I'm about to start now but here goes:

Just like Nance, I did have a mom who cared about me and loved me and I loved her. I no longer have that mom b/c she died last year but I still found this incredibly funny and I don't regret the fact that I kept many parts of my life private from my own mom. I dated plenty of lovely men that she never met. She didn't even meet my now husband until after we were engaged.

You can love your Mom and appreciate the fact that she cares but still need a little privacy in your life. Also, some moms are nuttier than others and you can't judge anyone's relationship with their mother by your own.

I DID have a mom who cared and loved me and I her. I just didn't care to have her that much in my business. and I also didn't bring men home, for the same nuttiness factor.

Poor Moms. Maybe the mom should tell the daughter she doesn't give a rip who she's dating or interested in. And maybe she and the neighbor could take a night class and be too busy to bother with the daughter. Maybe I'm just tired... but many girls would love to have a mom who cares.

If it wasn't for the fact that I know that I don't have a sister, I would totally think that this was my mother! I have had the exact same convo with her!
