IT IS TIME TO GROW UP

Backstory: I was whining to my mom about feeling neglected by my boyfriend(who I live with) who is an accountant and obviously quite busy this time of year. I am an only child.  My mom is the oldest of three. We sometimes have a hard time understanding each other because of this.

Mom: IT IS TIME TO GROW UP AND ADJUST TO THE KIND OF BUSINESS HE IS IN. HE ALSO IS PROBABLY PRE-OCCUPIED AND NOT LISTENING BECAUSE HE HAS SO MUCH ON HIS MIND. LEFT BRAINED PEOPLE ARE NOT WELL ADJUSTED PEOPLE. THEY CAN ONLY DO ONE THING AT A TIME.

Me: LOL You’re right.

Mom: ACCOUNTANTS ARE DULL AND BORING PEOPLE. YOU HAVE BEEN THE CENTER OF ATTENTION FOR A LONG TIME. PUT ON YOUR BIG GIRL PANTIES AND GET OVER IT.I WAS NEVER THE CENTER OF ATTENTION. BIRTH ORDER!!!!

I love 2 things about this. Firstly, the mom writes in full CAPS. CLEARLY SHE FEELS STRONGLY THAT HER KID OUGHTTA GROW THE HELL UP. Secondly, she used the term “big girl panties”. Awesome.

As the daughter on the end of this ‘coming to Jesus’ convresation with my mom, I can safely say that yes…me growing up and big girl panties are two things my mother feels quite passionately about. LOL

I must be getting there(the growing up, that is), because this conversation did make me feel significantly better about the momentary hissy fit I was having and helped me change my perspective on my feelings. LOL

Of course it helped that I had to laugh out loud when she went on her momentary rant about accountants/left brained people(which she works for) in the middle of it. LOL

While I agree with your momma that you need to put on your big girl panties, I bristled over her accountant comments, being married to one myself. Don’t worry May will be here before we know it! (Just try to enjoy the peaceful alone time until then)

Ha! My bf is a very busy musician and an only child, so he doesn’t understand my (occasional) need to be entertained and loved on constantly. My mom, the youngest of 5, grew up with a musician father so you’d think she’d be sympathetic….hmph. I guess I’ll have to buy myself a pair of these “Big Girl Panties” or something =\

I get the impression Mom’s not too fond of the boyfriend, which is interesting, because as an accountant, I’d think he’s probably pretty grown up. Also, Audra, if you want you mom to think you’re grown up, perhaps try not using LOL at the end of every sentence. Ironic that the one time it was used appropriately, you felt the need to spell it out.

Oh, my mom has no issue with the boyfriend. She just works for an accoutant and is a bookeeper herself. So it’s more mirthful than anything.

And you’re right. “LOL” is a bad Internet habit I’ve picked up because I’ve had my tone misconstrued so many times. Besides that though, what can I say? I’m a happy person.

As far as that influencing my mom’s opinion, not so much. She’s actually picked it up as she’s learning the way of the Internet.

And as far as spelling it out, “LOL” at the end of the sentence, while bad form, is appropriate. Actually using “LOL” as a word(lawl) in a sentence, would be taking it a step too far. =D

What is she whining about? She is the oldest and all first-borns are the center of attention before the siblings show up. He parent probably thought (and treated her like) she was the center of the universe when she was a baby.

Peter, unfortunately my mom never got to enjoy her birth order. Her sister was born 11 months after her, her brother 11 months after that. It was a busy three years for grandparents.
