Mom: Don’t forget to do your taxes! They’re due April 15th!
Me: I know, I already did them and mailed them out.
Mom: Really? I am SO PROUD OF YOU!!!!!
Me: For doing my taxes?
Mom: YES!!! SO PROUD!!!
Me: You do realize I have a Ph.D. and managed to become a professor right out of grad school, right?
Mom: Yeah, yeah, finished early, way ahead of your peer, award-winning….but you’ve never done your own taxes before! SO PROUD!

Yeah, this could be my mom, too. Although I haven’t gotten my Ph.D. yet, and hardly dare dream of how fabulous it would be to get a position straight away (CONGRATULATIONS.)

I like this Mom. I’m sure she’s proud of her child’s PhD (for some reason I keep thinking she’s a daughter) and professorship, too. It’s great of her to celebrate what seems to be a sign of adulthood, independence and responsibility for her. I don’t read it as patronising. She’ll never feel the need to remind her kid of doing their taxes in time again and that’s surely a good feeling. That’s got to be a different kind of pride to the “my kid’s a professor” pride.
