Defend Yourself!

Backstory: My sister is smaller and skinnier than me. My mom wanted her to take a self defense class in college.

me: You never wanted _me_ to take self defense classes.
mom: Well, you’re …. sturdy.

Haha! My dad and I had a similar conversation. He was taking me back to the airport after my sister’s graduation, when he told me that he knew he didn’t have to worry about me if there were any complications. He admitted that he was terrified for my sister and her friend to fly to Arizona, because if there were any problems, or they got lost, they would both end up crying and call him for help. When I told him that was a tad unfair, Dad looked at me and with a straight face said,” Your sister is a wimp and should have been born blond. It would never cross her mind to ask security or an employee for help.” I hate to say it, but the man had a point.

My grandpa used to tell me I was built for manual labor. I think he meant it as a compliment because I could help his 200+lb frame off the floor every time he slid out of his chair.

I still can’t decide if this type of situation would make me laugh or feel sad and reach for the ice cream.
